Education Group Receives Oculus Rift Donation from Oculus VR

Oculus VR will be giving devices to Major League Hacking with summer.

With the launch of the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) last month, Oculus VR knows it’s more important than ever to encourage new creators into the field of virtual reality (VR). One of the ways the company is doing this is by donating a few HMDs to technology education group Major League Hacking (MLH) its recently been reported.

Getting kids interested not only in VR but also building the next experiences for it in years to come could be an important step in securing the technology’s future. MLH runs student hackathon leagues and Oculus VR will be supporting VR education in classrooms with this donation, reports Venture Beat.

The Oculus Rift headset is tested by attendees at the Eurogamer Expo at Earls Court in London.

“It’s important to us that our students have access to the latest and greatest technology to learn on, beyond the limited tools they’re seeing in the classroom,” said Mike Swift, the cofounder and CEO of Major League Hacking. “This partnership with Oculus will help us empower the next generation of tech visionaries, and I’m beyond excited to see how these students will transform the world with VR.”

The headset manufacturer has been partnered with MLH for a couple of years now, with the group having received Oculus Rift DK2 units for students in 15 countries. The newer HMDs will be sent to MLH in August, although it’s unclear how many that will be.

Currently Oculus Rifts aren’t the easy devices to get hold of. Kickstarter backers began to receive them first on 28th March, while those that pre-ordered in January were due to see their headsets arrive later that week. But many have been voicing their concerns online through sites like Reddit, that they still haven’t received anything yet. If you were to order an Oculus Rift through the company’s website now, you’d be looking at an expected delivery date of August at the earliest.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Oculus VR, reporting back with any further announcements.
