Ubisoft Confirms Just Dance Will Have VR Release [UPDATED]

Just Dance is getting the VR treatment.

Ubisoft has confirmed that it’s planning to release four virtual reality (VR) titles this year but it’s also revealed that it has a VR compatible Just Dance in the works, though it’s release date hasn’t been confirmed. Since it’s not included in the confirmed 2016 lineup, we imagine it will be launched some time in 2017.

Considering Ubisoft’s conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) started with an extremely colourful and (and strange) dance show with Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now playing in the background it’s clear Ubisoft wanted to keep Just Dance at the front of player’s minds. After the telling dance performance, Ubisoft started its conference by confirming that Just Dance 2017 would be released on all platforms in October 2016 and that it would be coming to the Nintendo NX console next year. So, will a Just Dance VR videogame appeal to players? It’s likely.

The Just Dance series revolves around movement and rhythm, a style of gameplay that suits the movement and immersion offered by VR devices. Harmonix, the developer of Rock Band, sees VR as a promising platform for its own titles which are similar in their performative nature so there’s no reason why Just Dance VR shouldn’t work. It might even make the title more fun, taking players on stage to perform rather than watching themselves perform on TV. We suppose it would be much easier to dance like no one’s watching when you’re wearing a VR headset.

As the rest of Ubisoft’s lineup is going to be compatible with Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Playstation VR, it’s likely that Just Dance will be no different.

UPDATE: Since the publication of this article Ubisoft has contacted VRFocus to clarify that the version of Just Dance compatible with VR on show at E3 2016 was merely a technical demonstration and is not confirmed for commercial release. According to an Ubisoft spokesperson:

“The Just Dance VR Prototype which we showed at E3 2016 is a 3-minute immersive experience designed specifically for VR. It is not connected to Just Dance 2017, the next instalment of the Just Dance franchise that will launch on consoles this October 2016, and on NX platform next year. In its current state, the Just Dance VR prototype is our first foray into a virtual reality world, and it is not a commercial product that’s going to go on sale. We are always looking at the future and exploring new ways to experience Just Dance.”
