HTC Vive Preferred Over Oculus Rift By Devs – But Only Slightly

Surprisingly, the Cardboard was also picked over the Gear VR.

This might be the ultimate rivalry in the virtual reality (VR) industry: Oculus Rift vs HTC Vive. Even though there is a lot of talk, who else is better equipped to state their opinion than the people developing with hardware? That is exactly who was asked in this series of surveys, and it turns out that the HTC Vive is ever so slightly more preferred over the Rift.

These surveys, reported by gamesindustry.biz, featured 500 professionals who are involved in developing for the hardware. Although the Oculus Rift is said to have put the spotlight on VR initially, more developers are gunning for the HTC Vive.

Devs were asked before and after their first titles, and the stats are in: “Vive commands 48.6% compared to Rift’s 43.2% – but when it comes to their next title, 34.6% said they’re choosing Vive compared to 23.4% for Rift.” But, this isn’t entirely accurate as according to the report: “a large number of respondents skipped answering this question, which may suggest that many VR/AR developers aren’t confident about where their next project will be or even if it will be at all, given that this question did not include the option to respond with ‘Other’ or ‘None'”.

It’s not all about the PC-based head-mounted displays (HMD), as 14% of developers said they’re putting their next title on Cardboard compared to just 10.3% for Gear VR.

As well as VR, the surveys included development of augmented reality (AR), and the only HMD that was mentioned was Microsoft’s HoloLens as developers are reported to be excited for it.

But what counts for all of these devs is how they are funded: “49.7% are using personal funds, 33.4% are using existing company funds, while funding from clients (16.7%), angel investors (13.3%), venture capital (10.6%) or external publishers (4.7%) were all less popular methods of financing.”
