Minecraft Windows 10 Edition to Receive Native Oculus Rift Support

Minecraft for Oculus Rift will not be a standalone release, but rather an update to Minecraft Windows 10 Edition.

The virtual reality (VR) revolution hit a new stride with the release of Minecraft on Samsung and Oculus VR’s mobile collaboration, the Gear VR, but many have been anticipating the release of the title on Oculus Rift. Mojang, developers of the Minecraft videogame franchise, has confirmed that the release for Oculus VR’s tethered device will not be a standalone title, but a native update for the existing Minecraft Windows 10 Edition videogame.

Last month, in a blog post celebrating the first anniversary of Minecraft Windows 10 Edition, Mojang revealed that: “in the coming weeks, we’ll enable support for the Oculus Rift, giving players a whole new perspective on their favourite game.”

Further to this reveal comes the clarification that this support will not come as a separate release, but instead as an update to the existing Minecraft Windows 10 Edition. All gamers who currently own Minecraft Windows 10 Edition will receive Oculus Rift support at no additional cost.

Additionally, Minecraft Windows 10 Edition’s native VR support will bring many of the highly praised VR features from the Gear VR edition of the videogame to Windows 10, including a virtual living room view and unique VR turning controls designed to avoid the dreaded simulation sickness.
