Everyone’s favourite cartoon family, The Simpsons will be celebrating 600 episodes this month, and to mark the occasion the long running series has teamed up with Google VR to offer specially branded Google Cardboard head-mounted displays (HMDs).

This Sunday, 16th October, FOX will be airing Treehouse of Horror XXVII and the opening sequence will be made into a virtual reality (VR) experience, reports Entertainment Weekly. The Simpsons Couch Gag VR will be available on iOS and Android devices through the Google Spotlight Stories app.

Viewers can either watch the experience just on their smartphone of utilise a Google Cardboard for the full experience. And for anyone that doesn’t own one, head to simpsonscardboard.com to get one of the 25,000 headsets being given away for free.

Simpsons executive producer Al Jean said of the experience: “You can see different characters and different jokes and different music, different effects. The fun of it as a fan is looking at it and trying to figure out everything we’ve hidden in it. There’s a scene where the Simpsons are in a prison cell. In VR, you can look above them to the ceiling of the cave that they’re in. Below to the floor, over the left and over to right and behind you. You have six different views. Let’s say you see Moe and he does something. You turn again, and you look at him again, and he does something else.”

When asked for further info Jean commented: “There’s one character from Futurama and the clue is: It’s ‘Planet of the Couches’. There’s a reference to an upcoming Fox movie. Kang and Kodos are in it.”

If you’re a fan of The Simpsons and want to get your hands on one of the free headsets featuring each of the characters you better be quick, as they’ll likely go really quickly.
