AR Toy Air Hogs Connect: Mission Drone Arrives in US Stores

The toy retails for $149.99.

Back in December VRFocus reported on Spin Master unveiling a new remote controlled toy that utilised augmented reality (AR). With Air Hogs Connect: Mission Drone customers can fly a small drone using a smart device above a customised AR tracking mat, this creates a 3D world which can then be flown through. Today Spin Master announced that the toy has now gone on sale US retailers, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

Using a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) smartphone or tablet players interact with virtual missions such as vanquishing aliens or extinguishing fires all while challenging for top spot in a worldwide online leaderboard.

“With Air Hogs, Spin Master created the RC flight category. Our history of disruptive innovation continues with the new Air Hogs Connect platform. It pushes the boundaries of a remote control vehicle by combining it with one of the most talked about technologies today – augmented reality,” said Nick Beliaeff, vice president of production at Spin Master, Inc.  “This is where innovation meets entertainment. As the first product to be introduced to this new AR gaming platform, Mission Drone players will be amazed as they fly the physical drone in their living room, and then watch the room transform into a science fiction universe while they work to command a team of heroes and complete tasks, rescue missions and more in a unique mixed reality experience.”

Air Hogs Connect: Mission Drone retails for $149.99 USD, and users need to download the app which supports both iOS and Android devices.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Spin Master and AR, reporting back with any further announcements.
