Capcom to Focus on VR Content Development

Buoyant from the success of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Capcom is looking to invest more in VR.

Capcom is one of the first major videogame publishers to dive head-first into virtual reality (VR), with the recently released Resident Evil 7 biohazard fully playable on the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD). The revelation that a substantial amount of players had played in VR, despite the difficulty in acquiring the HMD at present, seems to have instilled faith in the new medium, as Capcom has declared their intentions to invest in more VR content.

Revealed as part of a press release revealing the company’s financial results for the nine month period ending December 2016, Capcom addressed the success of big titles such as Dead Rising 4 and, of course, Resident Evil 7 biohazard, while stating that spin-off titles such as Monster Hunter Stories received a ‘soft’ reception by comparison.

This information is available publicly, however Capcom has also stated an intention to focus more on VR content with the goal of creating a new market. Not only does this mean utilising its internal VR engine further, but also the company has undergone some reorganisation to accommodate the transition. According to VG24/7, the company is confident in the move thanks to the “successive releases of VR devices that are highly compatible with games.”

What is coming to VR next from Capcom remains to be seen, however Resident Evil 7 biohazard’s VR compatibility remains exclusive to the PlayStation VR until January 2018, so bets are on that we’ll see something new at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Los Angeles, in June.
