SK Telecom to Showcase ‘360 VR Live’ Platform at Mobile World Congress 2017

360 VR Live will initially be aimed at the enterprise market.

South Korea Telecom (SK Telecom) will be at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 next week to unveil its 360-degree live broadcast platform ‘360 Adaptive VR Live Streaming Platform’ (360 VR Live).

Built as an end-to-end broadcast system allowing users to produce and live stream ultra-high-definition (UHD) 360-degree immersive video, 360 VR Live uses differentiated stitching technology to seamlessly stitch multiple videos or images taken by a 360 camera. Using a multi-band blending algorithm, the platform stitches images in multi layers for a smooth effect, whilst supporting 60 frames per second (FPS).

SK Telecom also developed a real-time streaming technology called T Live Streaming, creating a better environment for live broadcasting of 360-degree video by dramatically reducing latency from over 20 seconds to less than five seconds.

“Immersive live VR broadcasting will become widespread in the 5G era. SK Telecom will focus on building a new media ecosystem by joining hands with diverse partners,” said Park Jin-hyo, Senior Vice President and Head of Network Technology R&D Center of SK Telecom.

360 VR Live incorporates realistic 3D audio based on binaural rendering technology. Recognising, in real time, the user’s accurate location including the direction of their eyes the platform provides sounds consistent with the user’s location.

The broadcaster plans to commercialise 360 VR Live initially for the enterprise market, looking at broadcasting companies and social networking sites. SK Telecom will also open its application programming interface (API) to build a new media ecosystem, so that individuals and small content developers will be able to create and offer 360 VR Live services.

As 360 VR Live is rolled out, VRFocus will bring you the latest updates.
