Space exploration simulator Earthlight has been successfully tested as part of NASA experiments with its Hybrid Reality Laboratory and the Active Response Gravity Offload System (ARGOS) at the Johnson Space Centre in Texas.
Opaque Media Group developed the virtual reality (VR) game to accurately depict the experience of human spaceflight. The NASA Hybrid Reality Lab (NHRL) are attempting to adapt the VR application to use as part of the next generation of training systems for future astronauts. Personnel from both Opaque Media and the NHRL combined the ARGOS with Earthlight to create a simulation of microgravity, giving the developers the unique chance to experience their game enhanced by equipment normally only used by astronauts.
“This was a successful first integration and test of Earthlight in the ARGOS environment, and we look forward to integrating some of Earthlight’s capabilities to further augment the Hybrid Reality systems we are developing for various NASA endeavors,” said Frank Delgado, lead of the NASA Hybrid Reality Laboratory.
“We’re quite excited to be collaborating with the NASA HRL and this is a substantial step in providing the level of authenticity that our fans are looking for in Earthlight,” added Emre Deniz, Director at Opaque Space and lead developer on Earthlight. “The vision of Earthlight has always been about giving the public access to the journey of human spaceflight and this collaboration around ARGOS and other simulations enables us to not only do that, but additionally to help NASA in that endeavor.”
Earthlight has previously been demonstrated at GDC and some other events, and is expected to see public releases some time before the end of 2017, exclusive to the HTC Vive.
