Unity Take On The US Travel Ban With Games Without Borders

The initiative will sponsor devs from countries affected by travel ban to attend Unite Europe event.

Unity is launching a new initiative called ‘Games Without Borders’, which aims to highlight the problems that the US Travel Ban instituted by President Trump has created within the technology industry.

Unity will be sponsoring individuals from countries which have been affected by the travel restrictions to their European event where they will be able to showcase their talents and collaborate with fellow developers and engineers from all over the world.

Successful applicants will receive assistance with the visa process, a round-trip airline ticket to Amsterdam and a ticket to the Unite Europe event in Amsterdam on 26th – 29th June 2017.

Unity had this today about the announcement: “Unity believes in democratizing game development, solving hard problems, and enabling success no matter where you’re from. It is those three core beliefs that drives us and it is our hope that Unity Without Borders helps us expose as many developers, artists, programmers and dreamers as possible to our amazing community.”

Tehran based PHD student and former Chief Operating Officer at Bearded Bird Game Studio SeyedMahdi Dabestani also made comment: “The Iranian games industry is vibrant and growing. We boast a talented developer community with more than 100 games studios, 80 percent of which are established teams and 20 of which are indie set ups. We also have five active gaming incubators and a games development institute to nurture talent within this thriving sector.

“Games developers from around the world are currently working in Tehran-based studios. At the same time many Iranian developers have settled in other countries and have roles in leading gaming businesses. Iranian developers are also active at games events and conference around the world. However, since the Trump administration introduced its unprecedented executive order, attending US events is no longer possible and we feel that there is no good reason for this.

“We welcome initiatives such as Unity Without Borders. The programme enables us to continue showcasing the potential of the Iranian gaming community at a global level. We also need to remember that the progress of this industry is not just about making more games – it’s about being able to drive awareness on a global stage as well as sharing and contributing ideas with our international peers. Programs such as Unity Without Borders provide a huge boost for Iranian studios; this way we are still able to have a presence and make our voices heard on the global stage.”
