Cognata Raises $5million in Funding For VR Simulation Platform

Cognata are developing a virtual simulation platform for testing autonomous vehicles.

Cognata have announced that they have successfully raised $5 million (USD) from the likes of emerge, Maniv Mobility and Airbus Ventures to accelerate production of a new simulation platform that combines artificial intelligence, deep learning and computer vision to assist in testing autonomous vehicles.

Even sophisticated learning systems in autonomous vehicles need to accumulate millions of miles of driving in order to achieve an acceptable level of accuracy, which can take years using current methods. Cognata is aiming to provide a realistic virtual environment for autonomous vehicles that will accurate model real-world environments and quickly generate results so developers and engineers can analyse the development.

The simulation will reproduce sensor input by emulating real-world materials and how they interact. The Cognanta platform can also emulate cities anywhere in the world, which allows for a range of driving scenarios in locations with dramatically different city layouts, geography and topology to test how the self-driving system react to unfamiliar environments.

“Every autonomous vehicle developer faces the same challenge—it is really hard to generate the numerous edge cases and the wide variety of real-world environments,” explains Atsmon. “Our simulation platform rapidly pumps out large volumes of rich training data to fuel these algorithms. We’re excited to introduce a scalable, safe, and cost-effective solution that not only accelerates the development and validation of autonomous vehicles, but also ensures that vehicles can be

much safer when they’re deployed in the real world.” Dovi Ollech, founder and managing partner of Emerge, who led the funding round, notes that “Danny and the Cognata team have shown rapid progress and achievements since their founding. Their deep expertise in deep learning and broad knowledge of the automotive ecosystem helped them develop an extremely innovative solution for one of the major pain points of this industry.”

François Auque of Airbus Ventures adds, “After extensive technical evaluation of the team and the technology, we look forward to using Cognata’s technology, which can accelerate the time to market for land-based autonomous systems as well as the kind of aerial systems we are focusing on.”

VRFocus will bring you further information on the Cognata platform and other VR simulation technology as it becomes available.
