First Quarter of 2017 Shows Over 400k PlayStation VR Headsets Shipped

Report by IDC shows that mobile VR dominates sales, but PlayStation VR also had a great Q1.

A report by the International Data Corporation (IDC) has released figures for the total sales of virtual reality (VR) devices for the first quarter of 2017. The report shows that mobile VR devices are still in the lead in terms of sales, but that the PlayStation VR also did very well.

Samsung Gear VR is the current leader in terms of VR device sales, boasting a figured of 489,500 units sold. Not far behind is the PlayStation VR, which sold a healthy 429,000 units. PC VR devices did less well, with the HTC Vive standing at 190,900 units sold, and Oculus Rift trailing behind with less than 100k units sold.

PlayStation VR has had a good Q1 for software, with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard doing well, and the VR version being a PlayStation VR exclusive likely helped to shift some units. Recent high-profile titles such as Farpoint and Star Trek: Bridge Crew are also quite likely to raise awareness for the headset and help move some PlayStation VRs from store shelves in the coming months. The PlayStation VR also has an advantage of not needing to lay out for a powerful gaming PC rig before getting into VR.

The report also stated that the total shipment of VR and augmented reality (AR) headsets reached 2.3 million, with a prediction that sales would reach a total of 99.4 million units shipped by 2021.

It remains to be seen how stand-alone devices like the upcoming Google/Vive/Lenovo headset will fare.

VRFocus will continue to report on developments within the VR market.
