Masked Rider Movie Comes to PlayStation VR

Popular Tokusatsu series Masked Rider/Kamen Rider gets spin-off VR movie for PlayStation VR.

The current incarnation of popular Japanese TV ‘tokusatsu’ series Masked Rider (Kamen Rider) will be getting a virtual reality (VR) spin-off for the PlayStation VR titled Kamen Rider Ex-Aid: True Ending.

Kamen Rider, often known as Masked Rider in the west, is a Japanese series of live-action TV shows that features a superhero figure called Kamen Rider, who fights against monsters while riding a motorcycle and often sporting an insect-like theme to his costume and weapons. Various incarnations of the series have been running since 1971.

The current incarnation of Kamen Rider, titled Kamen Rider Ex-Aid began in 2016 and features themes strongly inspired by videogames. An evil computer virus corporation forms the antagonist of the series, with a videogame company being responsible for creating the devices that allow the hero to transform into Kamen Rider.

The upcoming movie spin off was filmed with a 360-degree camera and will receive a special release for users of the PlayStation VR. The movie is apparently planned to take place some time after the events of the series, where Emu, the main hero of the series enters a VR world to combat the computer virus that has spread to the human population.

As part of the announcement, one of the cast, Hiroki Iijima, wore a Masked Rider Ex-Aid themed PlayStation VR headset, which was suggested to be a new transformation item that will appear as part of the movie.

It’s not currently known if the movie will have a full theatrical release, or if it will remain exclusive to the PlayStation VR. Most fans speculate that it will be released in theatres, with a special VR version reserved for the PlayStation VR.

VRFocus will bring you further information on PlayStation VR releases as it becomes available.
