Play Without a Controller In Gaze-Based Candy Squad

Hands-free virtual reality (VR) isn’t exactly new – Land’s End nailed it when playing VR games on mobile head-mounted displays (HMDs) was still new, but we don’t see enough of it these gaze-based experiences. Now we’ve got a new one, with Candy Squad – and to go with it, a new trailer with a fascinating choice of soundtrack…

In Candy Squad, players take up arms against waves of ugly candy-themed gremlins in a world that’s too cute for them to exist in. Players move their neck around to adjust the view of the game, and a hammer will attack enemies in the centre of the screen – marked by a dot for a crosshair.

Your hammer can absorb candy from the environment to grow bigger and stronger. It seems simple enough, and MyDream promise Candy Squad is family friendly.

The game will be launching for Gear VR, Google Cardboard, Google Daydream and Viveport. It looks cute enough, but we’re left with a fair few questions… It doesn’t look like the most essential VR title – even on mobile – but appearances can indeed by deceptive. Candy Squad offers 20 hours of gameplay, and game designer and MyDream COO Andrew Leker says it’s “pleasant like nothing I’ve ever played.”

Candy Squad is available on Oculus Store for Gear VR, Daydream Store, Google App Store and Viveport for Cardboard for an initial price of $3.99, with that price going up to $7.99 after two weeks. See more of the game (and an absurdly wonderful music choice) in the trailer below.
