Pimax Seeks Crowdfunding for 8K VR Headset

Company seeks $200,000 in funding to continue development of 8K VR headset.

Virtual reality (VR) hardware company first came to the attention of the VR community with the release of its 4K headset last year. Since then, the company has been improving the technology and is now seeking funding to continue its work with the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for the Pimax 8K.

The Pimax 8K is designed to be capable of a 200 degree field of vision, with 8K VR, offering a resolution of 3840×2160 per eye. The goal of the company was to reduce the impact of the ‘screen door effect’ which is experienced by many VR users due to a screen being so close to your eye, and can hinder the immersion of VR.

There are two tracking modes available, inside-out tracking and positional tracking with external tracking stations. Users will be able to switch modes at will. The Pimax 8K is designed to be compatible with Steam VR and Oculus software, so a vast library of content will be available to users.

Pimax Founder & CEO, Robin Weng comments, “The 8K VR headset allows people to become a part of the ultra-high definition environment, by digitizing 2D illustrations from a screen and transforming the very environment around you, invoking a whole new level of emotion while in this 3D virtual space. The 4K was a brilliant breakthrough, and we have grown from that into the next step with the 8K headset, bringing a more genuine realism to virtual reality. We are closing the gap between reality and the digital world.”

The Pimax team are hoping to raise $200,000 (USD) on Kickstarter. Further details are available on the Kickstarter page.
