The Battle Royale Genre Gets A VR Title In Until None Remain

Winner, winner, virtual dinner?

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, affectionately known to players as PUBG, has become a videogaming phenomenon. Setting an all-time player count record on Steam back in September and bringing to the fore the so called ‘Battle Royale’ genre of gaming, PUBG being joined by Fortnite‘s own Battle Royale mode on September 26th. A mode Battlegrounds‘ developer Bluehole is reportedly less than happy about.

Neither of those titles are based in virtual reality (VR), although Battlegrounds‘ first-person mode would be an interesting one to translate into the medium. In which case which will be the first VR title to successfully corner the Battle Royale genre?

One candidate is Until None Remain, an Unreal Engine-powered VR title by Indie videogame developers D.W.S. Until None Remain has just launched on Steam Early Access supporting both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive head mounted displays (HMDs).

“A futuristic multiplayer first person shooter in a Battle Royale or Last Man Standing format. Matches pit weaponless players against one another in a death match that continues until only one player remains.” Explain the developers. “Players must rush to acquire weapons, armor, or specialty items such as jet packs, or traps. Scale walls or objects using magnetized gloves, jet around the arena in a jet pack, and interact with an environment that includes turrets, explosive containers, noxious gases, and more!”

Much as with both Battlegrounds and Fortnite, gameplay takes place on a large play area which then forces players inward via a safe zone, travelling outside of which will result in any and all players slowly losing health over time. Until None Remain‘s equivalent of the Battlegrounds‘ electrical field/’Blue Zone’ or Fortnite‘s ‘storm’ being clouds of poisonous gas.

That’s not to say Until None Remain doesn’t have its own tricks up its sleeves. With different weapon types and armour, utilizable jet pack, the ability to climb walls and other objects thanks to some magnetic gloves, a system that rewards exploration with power-ups and more. Locations also appear to be more based indoors than out in the wild, with huge warehouses and storage areas linked by corridors.

Until None Remain is on Steam now and will be for the first week of its Early Access period be on sale for $4.80 (USD), a 40% reduction on its normal price. A trailer for the title is below. We’ll continue to bring you more Oculus Rift and HTC Vive news throughout the week on VRFocus.
