OptiTrack to Showcase Location-Based Arizona Sunshine at GDC 2018

The demo will feature HP Omen backpacks, Oculus Rift’s, and Striker weapons.

At the beginning of January VRFocus reported on Vertigo Games and HTC Vive revealing a location-based version of popular first-person shooter (FPS) Arizona Sunshine, which was on display at CES 2018 on the HTC Vive stand. With location-based VR becoming evermore popular, VRFocus has learnt that Arizona Sunshine will be making an appearance at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2018, appearing on the OptiTrack booth.

Just as with previous shows, OptiTrack will be demonstrating its tracking technology for room scale to warehouse scale locations. Featuring 600 square feet of untethered, undead action, the multiplayer experience leverages OptiTrack Active, HP Omen backpacks, Oculus Rift’s, and Striker weapons, allowing participants to roam freely and experience fully immersive VR in the post-apocalyptic environment.

Few details have been revealed about how the home consumer version differs from the location version in terms of actual gameplay. Naturally, with backpack PC’s, and wireless Striker weapons, location-based players are going to have lots more freedom. This setup is ideally suited to Vertigo Games’ upcoming two-handed weapon update for Arizona Sunshine, adding 13 new two-handed weapons including rifles, assault rifles and sub-machine guns, which will all feel that bit more natural with the Striker peripheral.

Vertigo Games has yet to confirm when this new location-based version of Arizona Sunshine will be rolled out to the general public. The two-handed weapon update will come to PlayStation VR users this month when the full retail edition of the title becomes available to European customers, so maybe it’ll happen after that. There’s no confirmation on whether the update will come to Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality headsets at the same time.
