South Korea’s Nexon Computer Museum Opens Third ‘VR Open Call’ Contest

Applications begin in July.

South Korea is one of the most tech savvy countries on the planet, with global giants like Samsung and LG based there. Located in Nohyung-dong, Jeju-si, Jeju, is the Nexon Computer Museum, dedicated to not only the history of computing and videogames but also the future. The museum has just announced its third NCM VR Open Call contest to support  experimental and creative art projects for virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR).

Beginning in 2016, the first NCM OPEN CALL was held under the slogan “VR, why just sit-watching?”, while NCM OPEN CALL 2017’s theme was “Beyond Reality, Around Reality, Through Reality,” broadening itself to AR and MR entries. For 2018 the slogan is “VReady?”

There’s no restriction in terms of platform, genre and theme for submitting VR, AR and MR content, with Nexon Computer Museum welcoming anyone with a creative idea, regardless of nationality, age, sex and profile.

“It feels like the future depicted in the movie Ready Player One by Steven Spielberg is not too far away in technical point of view,” said Director Yunah Choi of Nexon Computer Museum in a statement. “We are expecting active participation of potential artists with creative idea to extend the boundary of thoughts and emotion.”

Each of these are for certain stipulations, such as distinguished visual effects for Ho-Jeob-Ji-Mong.

Applications for the 2018 NCM VR Open Call begin on 1st July, with the closing date for applications being 31st August, 2018.

In addition to the main competition, winners will also get a special chance to be nominated for the NCM Accelerator. They’ll receive further support to develop further projects with sponsorship worth 10 million KRW for one year. Winners will be announced in October with Nexon Computer Museum holding an exhibition.
