Life In 360°: A Royal Residence

Newsweek goes 360 at Windsor Castle

Another week begins as it always does on VRFocus. Unless it’s one of those crazy weeks where someone, for some reason, decides to embargo something for first thing in the morning. After all, most everyone everywhere is trying to get their act together and understand what happened over the weekend.

Life In 360° / 360 Degree VideoWe’re sticking with the UK for this morning’s 360 degree video, more specifically the town of Windsor (or the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead if you insist) in southeast England. It’s a town known for several things, but none more so than Windsor Castle. It is, according to Newsweek who are responsible for this video, which was made before the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the pair of counties where I grew up – back on May 19th, 2018. It is also, they say, the home to the present Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip. Which is partially correct as it is true that they spend some of their time there as it is one of their official residencies and their home as of the weekend. But Newsweek somewhat infer it is their primary residence and it is not, that is still technically Buckingham Palace in Central London.

For people not familiar with some of the old customs of the UK and the British Royal Family, the clue as to whether or not they are ‘in’ is the Royal Standard flying above the residence.

Royal StandardHowever, it is a special residence to the Queen and it should not be a surprise that the royal family’s surname is Windsor. (See the series The Crown if you want to get into more details about that.) The castle itself has had mixed fortunes over the modern era, back in 1992 it suffered horrendous damage in a fire leaving the Queen “absolutely devastated”. Thankfully that has since been repaired.

You can see the video below. VRFocus will be back on Wednesday with another video.
