Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Gets Release Date and New Trailer

Ace Combat fans will have to wait until 2019 to take to the skies.

Fans of the Ace Combat series have been waiting patiently for the newest title in the franchise, which will see the aerial combat go into virtual reality (VR). Bandai Namco have now finally announced the release date for the title, along with a new trailer video.

The story of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown concerns a conflict between the small Kingdom of Erusea and the Osean Federation. After a land-grab by the Osean Federation to build a space elevator, war breaks out, but the Osean Federation is huge, with advanced and powerful planes and many pilots, leading Erusea to desperate measures.

The new trailer shows the protagonist of the game, known as ‘Trigger’. He is a pilot of a ‘penal squadron’, assigned to deal with dangerous and potentially lethal missions as penance for some terrible crime. Trigger’s plane shows the marks on his record in a very visible way, with the ‘three strikes’ displayed on the tail of his plane.

The title is said to feature dynamic weather for added realism, as well as aerial combat manoeuvrers which have been taken directly from real life. Local competitive multiplayer is planned to be available, allowing two players to engage in vicious dogfights.

The release date for the title has been set as 18th January, 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. PC games will need to cultivate slightly more patience, as the Steam release is set for 1st February, 2018.

Bandai Namco have said that several missions will be exclusive to PlayStation VR users, though most of the gameplay is playable without need for any VR equipment. Despite plans for a Steam release, there has been no word so far on any plans for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Windows Mixed Reality compatibility.

The new Gamescom trailer is available to view below. Further news on Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown and other upcoming VR titles will be here on VRFocus.
