New VR Prototyping Lab To Be Launched in Hamburg

NextReality.Hamburg is creating a hub where students and businesses can collaborate on VR projects.

An increasing number of educational institutions are setting up labs with immersive technology. The technology is flexible, able to help students develop in a number of areas. Now Hamburg has created a VR Prototyping Lab which will cater to students and companies.

The VR Prototyping Lab aims to establish a way to promote innovation for Hamburg media and creative companies who have in interest in developing VR. The integration with the University of Hamburg means that knowledge can be transferred both ways.

VR use-cases for products and services are created in co-operation with students at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) and the University of Hamburg, the VR Transfer Center in the M28 creative memory and Bauer Xcel Media, SPIEGEL Verlag and Foodboom.

The students at University of Hamburg and the design, media and information department at HAW develop VR prototypes as part of their course over a semester. This university project provides them with access to well-known companies who provide experience and knowledge on the practical side of the business. An official partner of the project, nextReality.Hamburg provides those students with experts in the VR area to act as mentors to further develop their VR projects.

As well as expert knowledge and support, VR hardware and tools will also be made available at the VR Transfer Center, which is located in the M28 Creative Storage in the Speicherstadt.

In the Autumn, an event will take place which will involve students and partner companies meeting to exchange ideas in media, entertainment, advertising, marketing and videogames. The goal of this event is ultimately to form three permanent student working groups who will work on producing VR prototypes for the respective partner companies.
