VR Coaster, Holodeck VR and MackMedia Team for New VR Attraction

New VR attraction will be soft-launching at Germany’s Europa-Park in September, 2018.

Location-based virtual reality (VR) attractions are becoming increasingly common across the world as a means for people to experience VR without needing to set up a VR rig in their own home. Three companies have joined forces to create a new VR attraction which will combine free-roaming VR with an intense VR thrill ride.

The new attraction is the result of a collaboration between VR Coaster, MackMedia and Holodeck VR, which will use the Holodeck VR platform to provide both a VR pre-show and a VR experience synchronised to a rollercoaster.

A VR experience title Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is planned for a soft launch at Europa-Park in September 2018. The experience combined pre-rendered CGI with real-time 3D in order to let guests move through a free-roaming VR experience before boarding the Eurosat Coastiality for a synchronised VR thrill ride.

“The Holodeck VR system, which can handle dozens of guests simultaneously, was the ideal extension to our patented approach of equipping ride attractions with VR” said Thomas Wagner, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of VR Coaster GmbH & Co. KG, “Our patent pending ‘Roam & Ride’ setup not only immerses guests in an exciting VR pre-show, but also makes the coaster boarding operations much easier and more efficient.”

“We are honored that Holodeck VR has been selected as the virtual reality platform provider for this groundbreaking new project,” said Jonathan Nowak Delgado, co-founder and managing director of Holodeck VR.

Holodeck VR says that its tracking system is capable of some of the highest throughput on the market,, as it can reliably track more than 100 objects at a time, in locations up to a stadium-sized spaces.

The launch of the new VR attraction form part of the extensive refurbishment of the Eurosat rollercoaster at Germany’s largest theme park, Europa-Park.

“As soon as I knew about Luc Besson’s new movie ‘VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS’, I wanted to feature it on the new Eurosat Coastiality VR ride. The setting, visuals and atmosphere are simply made for virtual reality. In combination with the innovative, world-first ‘Roam & Ride’ concept, Europa-Park visitors will embark on a virtual reality adventure like no other”, said Michael Mack, founder of MackMedia and managing partner of Europa-Park.
