Google Daydream and Samsung Gear VR: Pricing & Availability

Technical Specifications Phone Compatibility Daydream Vs Gear VR - Home Games & Software Pricing & Availability

The Samsung Gear VR’s original release, Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition, came in at a £199.99 GBP price point. Thankfully the VR industry has moved rapidly over the past two years, and the consumer edition of the device launched at a much more respectable £79.99. Google Daydream’s pricing strategy is currently unknown, but given that there will likely be a number of different manufacturers each with their own version of the head-mounted display (HMD), it’s likely to be far less clear-cut.

Samsung Gear VR: Pricing & Availability

The Samsung Gear VR is available at retail now. A promotion earlier this year saw the HMD offered for free with purchases of Samsung Galaxy S7 handsets, though that promotion has now ended. The HMD can now be purchased in the UK with a suggested retail price (SPR) of £79.99 GBP.

However, with Samsung Gear VR it’s not an all-in-one package. The device’s built-in touchpad is a decent entry-level control system, but for many experiences you’ll also need to purchase a Bluetooth control pad, which VRFocus has looked at in our best gamepads for Gear VR guide. This can increase the price significantly, on top of the HMD and smartphone purchase.

Google Daydream: Pricing & Availability

Google Daydream is set to launch in November, though no specific date has yet been revealed. Nor has a price point for the HMD. The expectation is that Google Daydream will be offered at various prices from each of the different manufacturers signing-up to deliver their own version of the HMD, but all will come packaged with the Google Daydream controller as standard.

Given that there are many different manufacturers aiming to produce their own version of the Google Daydream HMD, you can expect the device to be readily available at a significant amount of retailers both online and on the high street.

Google Daydream and Samsung Gear VR: Pricing & Availability Summary

The availability of the Samsung Gear VR has increased dramatically following the success of it’s free promotion, though it’s still limited mostly to online and select smartphone retailers. The Google Daydream is likely to have much wider availability – and therefore public visibility – though with the pricing strategy still unknown there’s room for Samsung to put distance between the two devices. By the time Google Daydream arrives the Samsung Gear VR will have been available to consumers for over a year, so a significant price drop is certainly not out of the question.
