The Best Free Games for Oculus Rift: Mythos of the World Axis & Lucky’s Tale

Lucky's Tale

VRFocus’ first two favourite Oculus Rift videogames are third-person platformers Mythos of the World Axis and Lucky’s Tale. The first is from an indie developer honing their skills the other is from a professional studio well attuned to VR.

The Best Free Third-person Platformers

Mythos of the World Axis

The concepts section of Oculus Home isn’t as well featured as it’s little sibling Oculus Store for Samsung Gear VR, with only four available experiences on offer. Of those four only one is an actual interactive videogame, the other are purely immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences. That sole title is Mythos of the World Axis, from indie developer Ats Kurvet. It’s a puzzle/exploration title that originally appeared via Oculus Share for the Oculus Rift DK2 head-mounted display (HMD).

Mythos of the World Axis is a dark, brooding adventure set from a third-person perspective. Players find themselves in an ancient labyrinth with only a flaming hand-held torch to light the way. To aid them in their quest to solve the labyrinth and escape players will have to hand a variety of magic spells, helping solve the puzzles that await. Alongside the spells the character also has a warp mechanic enabling warp points to be placed around an area, thus aiding the traversal of complicated sections and retreading steps.

Whilst Mythos of the World Axis is still an experimental project and as such hasn’t been fully finished, it’s still made the list as it provides a comfortable VR experience for first time users. VR doesn’t have to be in first-person to be immersive and there are quite a few developers working on third-person titles as one benefit is the comfort factor.

If puzzle videogames mixed with exploring deep, dingy caverns are your thing then VRFocus thinks this freebie is worth a look.

Lucky’s Tale

Probably the most well known title to feature on our round up of free videogames available for Oculus Rift owners is Lucky’s Tale. It’s likely almost everyone who owns the HMD has downloaded the videogame but it’s worth including as Lucky’s Tale is a great example of fun, inventive VR. Just like Mythos of the World Axis, Lucky’s Tale goes for the standard videogame approach of a third-person adventure title, but that’s where the similarity ends.

Developed by Playful Corp., Lucky’s Tale is a bright, bold, applicable for all ages platformer. The star of the show is a young fox called Lucky who has a living piggy bank friend called Pig. As friends they lookout for each other and naturally trouble comes calling in the form of a purple tentacle monster, which makes of with Pig. As fortune would have it Lucky’s piggy companion is full of coins which are left behind as a trail for the fox to follow and save his mate.

Just like most platformers, Lucky’s Tale features a definitive move set to traverse the myriad of environments. Players will be able to run, jump, climb and spin through forests, swamps, and much more.  Built from the ground up for VR, Lucky’s Tale has an endearing quality that should be explored, not missed.

As with a lot of VR videogames in these early years the experiences don’t particularly feature hours and hours for gameplay. Most gamers will probably playthrough Lucky’s Tale in around 3 – 4 hours, depending on how many secrets they uncover.
